Week 10 - Games and Avatar in the Information Age

Do you agree that you are cyborgian in nature?

Humans have now become more technological that ever. The introduction of the Information age brings forth advantages and disadvantages in the form of 'technological prosthetics'. According to Lury (1998) the term refers to the objects that are indispensable in our daily lives that assists us in our tasks. She has given the example of a photograph as being a 'technological prosthetic' for our memory so we can remember certain events or people. In my opinion, this is quite true as most people take photographs in major events to ensure that it happened.

With this in mind, the technological advances today have given us many 'technological prosthetics' that we take for granted. For instance, the smartphone or the laptop that we use. These 'technological prosthetics' have been taken for granted due to their ability to be used in multiple situations. Therefore, developing on this concept, the way we have used these 'prosthetic technologies' have become so ingrained in our lives that some people might not be able to do tasks if the device is taken away from them. It brings an issue whether humans now have become more post-human than ever before (Hughes, 2004). For instance, the usage of the smartphone can be considered a 'techonological prosthesis' that can be used in communication. Other functions of the smartphone can also be included in the criteria.

In conclusion, I agree that I have become quite cyborgian in nature because of the dependency of 'technological prosthetics' that have been introduced. It is difficult to function without the presence of these prosthetics as they have become part of my daily life.
