Week 11 - Information Graphics

Compare the two graphs below. What is the ethical problem here?

Initially, these graphs look very impressive from a visual perspective. However, if the reader continues to read at the variables and data values, it can be seen that there are several ethical complications on the two graphs.

First of all, the graph title itself is quite subjective as it obviously states the difference between both the softwares. At the time the graph was made, Microsoft was not known to be as open sourced as Linux so therefore, the initial title itself is a problem when trying to compare the two softwares.

Secondly, the variables on the X and Y-axis is different for both graphs. In the Linux graph, there are 10 variables and the Microsoft graph has 11 variables. Other than that, the variables on both graphs are not the same and there are only a few variables that can be compared as they are present on both the graph but comparison cannot be made as both of the graphs have different variables on the X-axis. The Linux graph uses the multiples of 5 for the value of its variable while the Microsoft graph uses multiples of 10. This makes it seem that there are more concern that will be faced if the Microsoft software is used.

Overall, these graphs cannot be used to compare the concerns that the company will face if they choose a software to be used because the graphs are not ethical and it can be seen that the producer of the graph has a biased opinion toward Microsoft that Linux is more suited for the company.
